Tempting it is to touch fire as it is to repel from a steep ledge, to stray beyond the 'no trespassing' sign, to stand against a threat to the greater good, or simply to create a harmless echo. Depending on the circumstance, your mother or the law may consider such activities disobedient, unjust, immoral or unrighteous. The remainder of folks will question what if, wonder how, and think of all things that could possibly go wrong. Even in the most innocent acts, many frighten upon the idea of condemnation. And for those who ask why... I simply say, “Why the hell not?”
SHIFT YOUR MINDSET:
Imagine you were told today was your last day, and upon receiving this horrid news you immediately detect a shift in your approach moving forward into your final hours. You no longer portray a soft-spoken, dull, inactive and lazy behavior; instead, you're now full-attack forward, through-the-finish mentality, at least I would hope so. Your mindset and demeanor change; you are careless of judgement from others, and you feel invincible with nothing to lose! In reality, this isn't the case. While days seem guaranteed we continue on the commonly-ill path of fellow traffic-seekers. However, I believe each one of us is able to redeem that full-forward conquering state of mind on any given day by using a device we’ve acquired through freedom of practice from the time we were born. I'm talking about our voice!
Naturally, each specie has its way of communicating and expressing various behaviors, whether it be done through markings of territory, body motion, vocal and or sound. It’s hard to believe we shouldn’t reach our vocal’s maximum volume and output given we are naturally provided the ability to produce such frequencies. The act of yelling is often perceived as child-like or lunatic behavior. Though, many have forgotten it is simply a form of expression, more importantly, a tool.
There is a reason athletes jump up and down yelling their hearts out before a big game. Not only does it remove butterflies, it increases adrenaline and testosterone. Pair the two forces with a sharp mind and you’ll feel nearly invincible.
Nowadays, we don’t hear much vocal depth outside of large crowds in sporting arenas booing and cheering, and even that’s rare as most have their mouths full with overpriced fast food. I’ll discuss gluttony later…
I will always yell with a purpose just as I would speak. Many people exert copious amounts of energy on the ‘he said/she said’ bullsh*t when that energy could, instead, be conserved to supplement that afternoon coffee with an awakening roar.
It may take several attempts to reach a loud consistent yell, and like most first-time practices don’t expect to sound like heaven crumbling right off the bat.
EMPOWER YOURSELF!
Using the lungs, vocals and built up emotions, I'd like you to yell, roar, howl, scream- Produce the loudest possible sound using your own unique chords and rhythms. If you're high-pitched, great! Own it. If you can’t hold a howl for very long, even better! Practice. But damn, it feels good, doesn’t it?
Six tips to yell efficiently:
1) Take a few deep breaths, each one longer than the last.
2) Focus on this specific task; Big Inhale, and on the exhale YELL!
3) Let the sound fly, focusing on volume and length.
4) Take a moment to breathe; reset.
5) And again, inhale, exhale- YELL!
6) Louder than the last.
Please note: You may experience shortness of breath, become light-headed, and acquire a surplus of energy.
Lifting the voice to such levels may attract attention including crazy looks, but that’s all part of the fun. It takes courage to initiate a good yell in any situation, though once you overcome that fear, the pleasure is all yours. Personally, I prefer a natural environment such as the desert where I’ve always felt in my element. Disturbing the city is fun just because it seems to be asleep even in broad daylight. One of the many beauties of yelling is it can be done anywhere anytime at the expense of nothing. And this, my friends, is why the hell I yell!
*Practice this fine tactic regularly and feel your confidence, attitude, energy and spirit build exponentially.
My top five places to yell:
1) On top of a mountain
2) The middle of a thunderstorm
3) Sporting event
4) While driving
5) Surfing in the ocean
